This class will focus on making handmade mini comic books/zines, and will take place over two half-days. We’ll cover different formats, subject matter, and materials. At the end of the two days, each student will take home their own pocket-sized comic/zine as well as a photocopy of each class member’s zine. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you have tools you like to draw with!

GLITTERY UNICORN PORTRAITS

Glitter makes everything more magical, so adding it to a unicorn is a natural! Learn how to paint a unicorn on canvas using acrylic paints to give it dimension. Top it off with metallic paint and glitter to really make it sparkle!

MINIATURE CACTUS ROCK GARDEN
Thursday, June 21
2pm – 4:30pm

Spend an afternoon exploring the fun of gardening without the worry of watering. Little green thumbs will pick through our rock nursery and choose some lovely rocks to paint. Then transform them into cacti and succulents using acrylics and paint pens. Finish up by “planting” them in a terracotta pot hand painted by you!

Hey, PDX Young Writers! Want to write the next Harry Potter? Learn how to build worlds and turn your stories into writing magic! Worskhop includes writing time, fun activities, and visits from Magic Writing Experts and Authors Emily Whitman, Kari Luna, and Eric Kimmel. They’ll share their pro secrets – and you’ll share your words – in this adventurous workshop taught by Jacqueline Raphael, an awesome writer/mentor with over a decade’s worth of experience teaching and mentoring young writers. Includes one-on-one feedback, publishing advice, and a writer’s showcase at the end

 

PDX Young Writers Camp offers:

– Freedom to write what kids want to write

– Visits from Oregon authors

– One-on-one feedback sessions with instructors

This summer’s guest writers include:

  • Kari Luna, author of The Theory of Everything
  • Eric Kimmel, author of more than 50 children’s books, including Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins and Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock.
  • Emily Whitman, author of Radiant Darkness and Wildwing (and with a new book, The Turning, expected in July)

Learn the exciting art of silk painting! In this camp you’ll create your own design, transfer it to silk and draw over it with a special no-heat resist material. Then paint with dyes and create a beautifully bright work of art that has a stained glass feel when hung in a window.
