Here at Spark we are asking ourselves what we can do in the midst of the protests, violence and ever present racial inequality. How can we enact change at the small business level? We are here to listen and learn and are adopting the following practices at our company.
In the immediate future we will be:
— examining the vendors we work with and the products we sell to ensure their beliefs, practices and policies align with ours.
–researching wholesale companies with the intent of carrying products created by people of color.
— donating to organizations that support Black, LatinX and Native American artists and education.
When classes resume in the fall we will:
— create a scholarship for low income children of color.
— incorporate works of art by people of color into our after school art class curriculum.
In the meantime we have found this wonderful list of children’s art books created by and about Black artists. It includes artists you may know such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Faith Ringold and is also a great introduction to artists you may not have heard of.
We also encourage you to support local businesses owned by people of color.
Learning and change go hand in hand and we are here to do just that. If we miss the mark on something, please let us know.
